As it can be seen in one of José Resende’s paintings, dated 1886, this
part of the town was just a desert, but, from the beginning of the 20th
century, Brito Capelo street in Matosinhos, initially known as Juncal de Cima
Street, would later have a structuring role in Matosinhos’, trade and industry,
coffee shops and hotels, American car, train, underground, library or Town Hall.
A set of images documents this transformation and is part of an exhibition
entitled Brito Capelo: memória (s) de uma rua, which will occur from May 13 on,
at open skies and in the same places where the story of Matosinhos took place.
The exhibition is hosted by the historian Joel Cleto and its opening, scheduled
for 10:30, will start with a guided tour through the memories of Brito Capelo,
starting at the intersection with Sousa Aroso street. The participants will conveniently
be allowed to use a mobile phone and headset to, through a radio frequency, be
able to listen to the stories narrated by Joel Cleto. Reproductions of
paintings, letters and photos of the Hall of records will be part of this
exhibition, which may be visited between Cidade do Salvador square (the
so-called Anemone roundabout) and Matosinhos City Market. Brito Capelo: memória(s) de uma rua is part of the Spring program Primavera em Matosinhos, Which starts on
March 30 and intends to boost and revitalize the traditional and local trade.
