In recent years, the opening of the Great Egyptian Museum, located next to Cairo's famous Great Pyramids on the Giza plateau, has faced several delays since its construction which began in 2012. It is believed, however, that its inauguration will be in 2020 and that it will be the largest archaeological museum in the world. According to the Egyptian authorities, the museum will display, through the latest technology, the history of the Egyptian civilization over the centuries, with a record from pre-dynastic history to the Greco-Roman period. According to an official statement from Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities, several artifacts were transferred from the famous Cairo Museum in Tahrir to the Great Egyptian Museum, including a granite statue of the Sphinx of Ramses II and a granite column of Amenemhat Iii.
