Sofia Escobar swapped London for Spain and, after having conquered the British, she did exactly the same thing with the Spanish while playing Mary Cullen in the successful musical El Médico. It was precisely her brilliant interpretation in this musical that gave her the award for Best Leading Actress in theatre, in the Premios del Público BroadwayWorld Spain 2019. In this ceremony, which has already nine editions, the best productions and the best musical theatre professionals performing in Madrid and Barcelona are awarded. El Médico is an original Spanish musical, based on Noah Gordon’s bestseller, The physicist. It is an epic story which took place in the 11th century about the beginnings of medicine and the journey of the protagonist, Rob, to achieve knowledge. During this trip, Rob meets Mary, a young Scottish girl. She is a strong, brave, decisive woman, a woman capable of anything for love. «This was a character that gave me too much work to find and work, and the vocal is very demanding as well. It is a great musical with more than one hundred people working daily, an orchestra of 21 musicians, an exciting story and absolutely genial music», confessed Sofia, adding: «It is something wonderful for many reasons. It is the first work I do in Spain and having this recognition not only from the critics but also from the audience, is something that makes me tremendously happy and even more encouraged to continue to do my best in every show». The actress confesses that she wasn't even expecting to be nominated, so winning was an absolute surprise, also for the fact that the other nominees are already well-known Spanish actresses «and all of them are fantastic».
