50 anos de independência de Angola

50 years of Angolan independence

On November 11, 1975, Angola rose up as a free nation, and with it, a people full of hope. António Agostinho Neto, poet and first President of the Republic, recalled that “the homeland has achieved greatness because it is free”. Under his leadership, not only institutions, but also dreams and identity came into being, and Angolan culture became a mainstay of the nation.

With José Eduardo dos Santos, who took office in 1979, Angola experienced decades of consolidation and growth. Roads, ports and modern cities transformed the country, while the economy prospered and culture flourished. “The future of Angola will be built with work, courage and determination,” he said, and every project that was completed reflected the strength of a united people.

In 2017, João Lourenço proclaimed: “Angola has the right to grow, to be fairer and to offer opportunities for everyone.” Under his leadership, education has made great progress, schools have opened their doors to thousands of young people, hospitals have admitted citizens of all ages, and cultural programmes have boosted national pride.

Education, once a dream, has become a reality. Schools, universities, and libraries have transformed knowledge into strength, preparing every Angolan to build the country they deserve. In health, every hospital, every vaccination campaign, and every prevention initiative has shown that the nation cares.

The economy has diversified, encompassing oil, diamonds, agriculture and trade. Renovated roads, bridges and cities have become symbols of progress. Culture has thrived: music, dance, literature and visual arts celebrate Angolan tradition and creativity, showcasing the country to the world.

As it celebrates fifty years of independence, Angola is a beacon of courage, talent and hope. Every road, school, hospital and cultural endeavour is a tribute to the greatness of its people. Angola is a country that dreams and achieves, that grows while preserving its history, and whose pride is reflected in the eyes of every citizen.

Today, fifty years on, Angola is free, creative and resilient. A country that has turned challenges into opportunities and whose greatest treasure is its people.

Angola is, and will always be, a source of pride for all Angolans.
