In a year in which Angola celebrates half a century of independence, TAAG reaffirms its role as a key player in national cohesion and the country's international profile, undergoing a period of change that combines modernization, expansion, and a renewed commitment to the development of Angola. Clóvis Rosa, Chairman of the Board of Directors, talks to Villas&Golfe about this phase of transformation, marked by the modernization of the fleet, expansion to the new airport, and a strategic vision that places the company at the center of economic and social development.
How would you describe TAAG’s role in these 59 years of its history, in the context of the 50 years of Angola’s independence?
TAAG is a symbolic cornerstone of national identity and a key driver of development. Over the course of almost six decades, it has been the bridge between generations and territories, uniting Angola from Cabinda to Cunene and connecting the country to the world. As an airline, TAAG is both an instrument of sovereignty and of territorial cohesion, which has been part of the construction of the State and the consolidation of independence.
In 2025, the year in which we celebrate 59 years of our history and 50 years of Angola’s independence, the company is experiencing a watershed moment, marked by decisive achievements, modernisation, international expansion and a renewed commitment to excellence and national progress.
«Ever since the country gained independence, TAAG has been present at every decisive moment in the country’s history.»
What have been the most significant moments for TAAG in supporting national development since 1975?
Ever since the country gained independence, TAAG has been present at every decisive moment in the country’s history. It has guaranteed mobility during difficult periods, ensured connections between provinces and played an essential role in rebuilding the economic and social fabric. It continues this mission today, with routes that unite communities and drive regional growth. Among recent milestones, I would highlight the transfer of our operations to Dr António Agostinho Neto International Airport, which ushers in an era of greater efficiency and competitiveness, positioning Angola as a future leading aviation hub in Africa. This is a historic step, one that symbolises the matureness and vision of Angolan aviation and which enables it to contribute increasingly to the stimulation of domestic and foreign tourism.
Over these decades, how important has the company been in terms of territorial integration and the mobility of Angolans?
TAAG has been, and continues to be, the main air bridge between the provinces. Each domestic flight is an act of inclusion and national commitment. By ensuring regular connections from north to south, from Cabinda to Cunene, the company not only ensures the mobility of people and goods, but also promotes economic, social and cultural integration. In a country of continental dimensions, TAAG is the backbone of national connectivity and plays an essential role in the decentralisation of development.
How would you assess TAAG’s contribution to tourism and Angola’s international profile?
Tourism is one of the strategic sectors for economic diversification, and TAAG is one of the main facilitators. Our expanded international routes in 2025 are strengthening connections between Angola and other African destinations, promoting the flow of visitors and of investment. The company has contributed to Angola’s profile as an emerging and authentic destination, offering a travel experience that reflects hospitality, modernity and sustainability. Every passenger who travels with us takes with them a little of the essence of Angola, its human warmth, professionalism and national pride.
What major challenges has the company had to face in the past and what lessons have been learned for the present?
TAAG has faced economic constraints, market transformations and increasingly demanding technological requirements. But each challenge has fortified its resilience and ability to adapt. The lessons learned are now incorporated into our strategy: more robust governance, more efficient operations, sturdy international partnerships and structured investment in national talent. Sustainability, seen in all its dimensions – economic, environmental and social – is the foundation on which TAAG is building its future.
«Every passenger who travels with us takes with them a little of the essence of Angola, its human warmth, professionalism and national pride.»
In the present circumstances, what are TAAG’s priorities in responding to the demands of the economy and the global market?
Our priorities are based on three aspects: modernisation, efficiency and sustainability. In 2025, we achieved significant progress: the transfer to the new airport, the implementation of a restructuring plan with Lufthansa Consulting, and the creation of Menzies Aviation Angola, a strategic partnership between TAAG, Menzies Aviation and SociedadeGestora de Aeroportos (SGA).
These steps are strengthening the company’s institutional credibility and raising standards of quality, safety, and professionalism in the sector. The goal is clear: to have a modern, profitable TAAG with an international vision that is in line with the best practices in global aviation.
What role will Luanda’s new airport play in establishing TAAG as a regional and international hub?
Dr António Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN) is the infrastructure that will enable TAAG to expand its strategic potential. This airport is the epicentre of a new ambition. With greater capacity, advanced technology and energy efficiency, AIAAN positions Luanda as a point of convergence for African and intercontinental routes. For TAAG, it represents the ideal base for sustained growth, attracting new markets and affirming its position as a regional hub of excellence.
The modernisation of the fleet and services can already be seen. What impact do you expect in terms of efficiency, quality and competitiveness?
The modernisation of the fleet is a priority that is a reflection of our vision for the future. More efficient aircraft mean lower emissions, lower fuel consumption and greater operational reliability. But this process goes beyond technology. It also involves the digitisation of processes, improving the customer experience and empowering our employees. TAAG is investing in a more environmentally friendly and intelligent operation, in line with Sustainable Development Goals. The result we are striving for and building towards is to become an increasingly competitive, sustainable company that is prepared for the challenges of an increasingly demanding market.
How is TAAG positioning itself to support Angola’s economic growth over the next 10 to 20 years?
TAAG is a driver of national growth. Air transport is vital for tourism, trade, investment and the circulation of knowledge.
By expanding its network, growing its cargo business and investing in the training of national staff – through programmes such as AbInitio - PilotosCadetes and the Aircraft Maintenance Technician Training Programme – the company is preparing the future of Angolan aviation and actively contributing to job creation and to the country’s economic diversification. TAAG believes that Angola’s development is also measured by its ability to train, retain and value national talent.
What message would you like to send to Angolans about TAAG as a national symbol and a driving force for development, on this milestone of 50 years of independence?
TAAG is a reflection of what Angola represents: resilience, ambition, the ability to dream and make things happen. In this year in which we celebrate 50 years of independence, we are reiterating our commitment to the country and to all Angolans who place their trust in us. We will continue to proudly fly the Angolan flag, modernise responsibly and promote the country’s name with dignity and excellence.
TAAG is much more than a national symbol. It is an instrument for the future. And TAAG’s future is Angola’s future, as it flies even higher.
