Right on the banks of the Douro River, nestled within a newly constructed residential complex, we find this project by ADA-Atelier de Arquitetura. Born from the client's desire to combine two 247 m2 apartments into a single 500 m2 three-bedroom penthouse, this apartment in Foz do Douro offers views of one of Portugal's most stunning urban and natural landscapes.

ADA's design concept focused on creating a modern and comfortable home with sustainable and eco-friendly principles, aligned with the Passivhaus concept, ensuring maximum energy efficiency while simultaneously taking advantage of the stunning south-facing views. Considered the project's greatest challenge, the beauty of the surrounding landscape was captured and seamlessly integrated into the interior spaces.
Spacious and open-plan, the living room offers a full appreciation of the spectacular outdoor landscape, enhanced by a stunning sunset. This space is subtly divided by two conical volumes: the larger serves as a guest bathroom, separating the entrance hall from the living room, while the smaller volume functions as a bar cabinet. A pellet-fueled fireplace, set between two large windows, provides warmth during the winter months. The south-facing balcony, with views of the river and the ocean, transforms the living room windows into stunning natural screens filled with light.
White was chosen as the primary color for surface finishes, reflecting the ever-changing hues of sunlight throughout the day and seasons. The balcony slab provides excellent protection from direct sunlight, allowing for the installation of large triple-glazed sliding windows for greater thermal efficiency. On the east and west facades, where the windows lack solar protection, two internal gardens were created to act as natural thermal shields.
Access to the master bedroom is via a scenic, undulating hallway flanked by curved pivot doors that conceal the dressing areas. From the bed, whether sitting or lying down, you can enjoy the mesmerizing view of the river merging with the sea—a truly unique and dreamy view. Even from the master bathroom window, you can glimpse the river and the city.

Sustainability is at the heart of ADA's design, proving that even a luxury apartment can be an eco-friendly home. The smart home automation system ensures high efficiency and energy management. The flooring is made of oak composite wood sourced from renewable trees and laid on plywood. LED lighting, known for its low energy consumption, is used in all rooms. In the bathrooms, water waste is minimized using photovoltaic panels, which pump and filter shower water for reuse in the toilet.
This apartment features a meticulously designed and customized layout for all functional spaces, including the guest bathroom, bedroom closets, kitchen cabinets, and living room storage. It embodies the essence of sustainable living, offering a highly energy-efficient space close to Passivhaus certification. Furthermore, its advanced air treatment system ensures a healthy indoor environment, making it a peaceful and comfortable retreat that fully embraces the beauty of its surroundings.
