Feiras Novas de Ponte de Lima - Dois séculos da maior celebração da cultura popular portuguesa

Feiras Novas de Ponte de Lima - Two centuries of the largest celebration of Portuguese folk culture

There are festivals you visit, and there are festivals that you get to experience. The FeirasNovas de Ponte de Lima undoubtedly belong to the second of the two. Regarded as the “largest live gathering of folk culture in Portugal”, every year these festivities transform the country’s oldest town into an extraordinary showcase of traditions, devotion, music, ethnography and community spirit, bringing together thousands of participants and visitors on the second weekend of September.

The 2026 festival celebrates a particularly symbolic milestone: 200 years of history.

The 2026 festival celebrates a particularly symbolic milestone: 200 years of history. Two centuries of a festival shaped by the people, preserved by successive generations and repeatedly renewed, whilst retaining its authenticity and its ability to delight those who experience it.
The history of the Feiras Novas dates back to May 05, 1826, when the inhabitants of Ponte de Lima requested royal permission to hold a three-day fair, with the aim of celebrating the veneration of Our Lady of Sorrows. The statue of the patron saint, worshipped in the Parish Church, is still carried out every year in a majestic procession through the streets of the town, in one of the pilgrim festival’s most devout moments. Over time, the official name was gradually replaced by the popular expression ‘FeirasNovas’, a name that has since spanned generations and has come to be synonymous with the great Ponte de Lima pilgrim festival.
For four days, Ponte de Lima is totally transformed. The streets fill with colour, music, bass drums, giant puppets, ‘cabeçudos’ (large-headed street performers), folk dance groups, folk parades, market traders, livestock farmers and thousands of people, in an atmosphere filled with joy, hospitality and a strong sense of belonging. The people of Ponte de Lima take centre stage as the leading figures and guardians of a living cultural heritage.
The programme at each Feiras Novas festival offers a snapshot of the traditions of the Upper Minho region. The Ethnographic Procession recreates rural ways of life, trades and customs, bringing together hundreds of participants in a parade of immense historical and cultural richness. The Historical Procession, dedicated this year to the theme ‘Pilgrim festival by night and day – 200 years of Feiras Novas’, takes the audience on a journey through different moments in the history of Ponte de Lima, bringing to life key figures and episodes that have shaped the municipality’s identity.
Another of the most eagerly awaited events is the so-called ‘Gathering of Rugas’, where folk groups meet for singing contests, with concertinas and spontaneous performances that take over the streets well into the night. These are joined by the Folklore Festival, the iconic Cattle Fair – one of the most authentic representations of the ancient fairs that gave rise to the pilgrim festival – and the Gathering of ‘Gigantones’, ‘Cabeçudos’ and Drum Groups, which adds even more colour, rhythm and lively entertainment to the festival grounds. The evenings conclude with firework displays that attract thousands of spectators.
Above all else, the FeirasNovasis a collective experience. Here, generations come together, families and friends reunite, traditions are preserved and new memories are created. This is a festival where popular culture still thrives in a spontaneous and participatory way, making every visitor an integral part of the pilgrim festival.
The bicentenary celebrations also represent an opportunity to showcase the tangible and intangible heritage associated with the FeirasNovas. Highlights of the commemorative initiatives include the revamp of the brand identity, designed by Madalena Martins, which has evolved towards a more contemporary visual style while preserving the identity of the figure created 27 years ago.
The celebrations also include the reissue of the book FeirasNovas by Amândio de Sousa Vieira. First published two decades ago, the book is now being published in a commemorative two-volume edition, where the second volume is dedicated to the changes and experiences of the festival over the last twenty years. More than just a documented record, the book serves as a testament to the collective memory of the pilgrim festival.

The Ponte de Lima Municipal Library is also commemorating the bicentenary with the exhibition “Feiras Novas in Posters”, dedicated to the graphic evolution of the pilgrimage, whilst the CIT – Territory Interpretation Centre is presenting the photographic exhibition “My FeirasNovas”, which looks back at the festival through the memories of those who have experienced it and continue to do so.
As it celebrates 200 years, the FeirasNovas reaffirms its status as much more than just a festival. It is a defining part of the heritage of Ponte de Lima and Portugal, one of the greatest symbols of popular culture, devotion and Minho tradition, where past, present and future come together every year.
