Viúva Lamego - A história de um saber emblemático

Viúva Lamego - The story of an iconic body of knowledge

In the heart of Sintra, where the light bathes the mountains in a delicate veil, lies one of the most extraordinary tales of Portuguese culture. Founded in Lisbon in 1849 by António da Costa Lamego, ViúvaLamego has spanned generations, establishing itself as the guardian and foremost exponent of Portuguese tiles. To tell its story is, inevitably, to tell the story of Portuguese azulejo tiling.
In the early days, the factory mainly produced everyday objects in red clay, white clay tiles and some glazed pottery. With the arrival of the 20th century, tiles became its core product and ViúvaLamego became a home for artists, providing studios and supporting creators through all stages of the process. In the 1930s, the industrial side of the business was moved to Palma de Baixo; in 1992, it settled permanently in Abrunheira, Sintra, where the factory, shop and showroom are now located – a space where tradition and modern world coexist naturally.

Since 1876, when the founder’s widow (viúva in Portuguese) took over the helm of the company, the name has become a symbol of continuity, vision and courage. But it was in the 1930s that one of its most distinctive strengths was consolidated: collaborating with visual artists. The factory opened its doors to experimentation and became a hub for artistic development, facilitating encounters between artists and master craftsmen in a fruitful relationship of discovery.
A prime example of this is Jorge Barradas, a key figure in the renewal of ceramics in Portugal. Part of his pioneering work was developed at ViúvaLamego, contributing decisively to the modernisation of artistic tiling and influencing subsequent generations, such as Manuel Cargaleiro and Querubim Lapa. This tradition of creative collaboration has continued to the present day, with contemporary artists such as Vhils, Add Fuel, KruellaD’Enfer, Adriana Varejão and NoéDuchaufour-Lawrance.

ViúvaLamego produces tiles with intense sheen and colour, whose presence is striking thanks to a unique glaze. From traditional to contemporary, each piece passes through the hands of master painters. The accumulated experience of the team allows them to explore new avenues in format, colour, finishes and technical bases, expanding the possibilities of the material without straying from time-honoured knowledge.
The factory-studio is, above everything else, a space for experimentation. Work is done to order, listening to architects, designers and artists, seeking solutions for each project – whatever the scale, design or colour palette. The team of technicians and artisans transforms each order into a unique piece, made with precision, sensitivity and skilled craftsmanship.

This philosophy has attracted some of the greatest creative minds in design, architecture and art, who have come to see tiles as their material of choice and ViúvaLamego as the ideal place to turn their bold ideas into reality. Examples of this are collaborations with Kengo Kuma at the Centre for Modern Art of the CalousteGulbenkian Foundation, with Joana Vasconcelos in the work presented by the Rothschild Foundation, and the international presence at the Osaka Expo, where more than 700 hand-painted tiles celebrated Portuguese art.
Remaining faithful to the past while looking firmly to the future: it is in this elegant dynamic that ViúvaLamego builds its path. Traditional craft techniques exist alongside new technical approaches, with a focus on innovation and sustainability. Each tile carries memories, but also promise.

More than just a brand, ViúvaLamego is a Portuguese cultural institution– a place where clay comes to life, where the sheen of the glaze captures the light, and where, piece by piece, art continues to write a timeless story.
