Marrakech - The magical atmosphere of a bewitching city
Share
It's the city in Morocco that receives the most tourists, and there's no doubt about the reasons: Marrakech is warm and captivating, captivating those who pass by, leaving behind an experience that embraces all the senses. It's no wonder it's also known as the Red City, a name that befits its magical atmosphere, inviting you to an unforgettable travel experience.
There are sounds, smells, colors, flavors, and people—lots of people. Marrakech has a unique ability to immerse us in a particular reality, one that overwhelms us, makes us see, reflect, and feel. The sound of traditional instruments heard everywhere awakens our hearing, and the bright colors of the clothing stimulate our vision. The intense aromas of spices stimulate our sense of smell. The daring Gibraltar macaques may jump on your shoulder, and don't be surprised if they suddenly "invite" you to wrap a snake around their neck. It's all part of this mix of tradition and modernity that the city offers, increasingly improved and with a luxurious side that has awakened and become more pronounced: the private riads are true works of art, charming and immersive, and the luxury resorts are also part of the new region of Marrakech.
«Marrakech is warm with soul, it captivates anyone who passes by.»
Jemaa el-Fna Square, in the heart of the city, is the perfect starting point for this visit. So intriguing, this square can easily fill an itinerary, offering immense sensations and experiences, even providing a way to adapt to an exotic and very distinct culture. With each passing hour, Jemaa el-Fna Square takes on a new appearance. Therefore, it's a must-see to stroll through its corners at different times of the day, crossing paths with street artists, traditional leather sellers, snake charmer, gnaoua musicians, and spice and essence specialists—an approach you'll find insistent, but one that's part of life in Marrakesh, in a world where bargaining is imperative.
The Koutoubia Mosque, the minaret, and the ruins of the old mosque are worth visiting, as is the Menara Gardens, a true oasis on hot-stop routes. And as for taste, Moroccan cuisine can captivate even the most discerning palate. Spices are a staple in traditional cuisine, but the delicacies aren't overpowering. Tajine, a typical Moroccan stew, couscous, pastilla, and mint tea (quite sweet) are all worth trying. It's worth considering the restaurants surrounding Jemee el-Fna Square, which typically offer panoramic views and quality food.
Still in the old part of the city, surrounded by the walls, walking through Marrakech's medina is a more spiritual way to experience this city, which, in a way, also invites us to get in touch with who we are. While in these parts, be sure to also visit Le Jardin Secret, the Ali Ben Youssef Medersa, the carved cedar Chrob fountain, and the Marrakech Museum.
In the new city, just outside the walls, we find a modern and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Here, you'll also experience the contrast of an exotic world, where luxury and ostentation gain a greater presence. Along the way, we suggest the colorful and unmissable Majorelle Garden and the gigantic El Badi Palace. And despite the modernity, know that the luxury riads will make you feel like you're experiencing the true Moroccan spirit, where the impeccable Arabic style will fascinate you.
We could say that Marrakech is a destination for enthusiasts. But respect for the people is essential. Be aware that many locals refuse to be photographed, as in the past there was a deep-rooted belief that a stolen image was a stolen piece of their soul.
Go to feel. To discover. And even, in a way, to challenge yourself. Marrakech has the power to move us, from the outside in and from the inside out.
