São Miguel - Refúgio atlântico de reecontro com o essencial

São Miguel - An Atlantic haven to reconnect with what truly matters

In the heart of the North Atlantic, the archipelago of the Azores rises above the waters as a place where nature sets the pace and authenticity continues to thrive. Among its nine islands, São Miguel sets itself apart not only for its size, but also for the richness and diversity of its landscapes. This is a territory shaped by volcanic forces and softened by centuries of peaceful existence, where every setting inspires contemplation.
Known as the ‘Green Island’, São Miguel reveals an infinite palette of natural colours. Its lagoons, formed in ancient volcanic craters, are perhaps its most iconic attractions. Lagoa das SeteCidades, with its two blue- and green-coloured lakes, and Lagoa do Fogo, wilder and unspoilt, present almost unreal landscapes, shrouded in delicate mists that accentuate their ethereal character. These places demand more than just observation; they require time, silence and presence.

But it is in Furnas that the island reveals one of its most unique features. This volcanic valley, alive and pulsating, offers a deep connection to the earth. Here, geothermal waters take centre stage, creating a setting where well-being is intrinsic to the landscape itself. Poça da Dona Beija, surrounded by dense, exotic vegetation, offers a unique sensory experience: four pools of warm, iron-rich water, where your body surrenders to the natural heat whilst your mind is freed from the demands of the outside world. At dusk, the ambiance becomes even more immersive, almost meditative.
Just a few minutes away, Terra Nostra Park offers a more leisurely visit. This century-old botanical garden, inspired by Romanticism, harmoniously blends nature and history. Exploring it is an opportunity to discover species from the four corners of the globe, serene lakes and secluded spots that seem frozen in time. At the heart of the park, the famous thermal pool – with its iron-rich waters and constant temperature – offers a soothing, almost therapeutic soak, where the concept of relaxation takes on a whole new dimension.
Staying in the island’s green heart, you’ll find one of its most romantic hideaways, particularly when visited at night: CaldeiraVelha. Set within a dense, humid landscape, where ferns and mosses form an almost primordial scene, this natural space beckons you to take a dip in thermal waters surrounded by a delicate waterfall and hot steam. More than just a place, this is a pure sensory experience, where the sound of the water and the volcanic heat create a deeply rejuvenating atmosphere.

São Miguel is also an opportunity for mindful movement. The island is home to a network of trails that pass through some of the most breath-taking scenery in the Azores. Paths that wind along cliffs, cut through forests of cryptomeria, follow streams and lead to hidden waterfalls. Exploring them is more than just physical activity; it is a form of reconnection, where every step brings you closer to what truly matters and further from the noise of everyday life.
Across the island, volcanic waters take many forms: in the fumaroles releasing hot vapours, in the thermal springs bubbling up from the earth, and even in the famous Furnas stew, slowly cooked in the underground heat. This special relationship between man and nature reinforces the feeling of balance and authenticity that defines São Miguel.
In this land shaped by fire and softened by water, the concept of luxury is redefined: it lies not in excess, but in authenticity. To truly experience São Miguel is to hear the wind on the hillsides, to immerse oneself in warm waters beneath the open sky, to lose yourself – and find yourself – amidst endless greenery. It is often said that São Miguel is not a place to be visited, but one to be felt. And, inevitably, it leaves a lasting impression on you, in both body and soul.
