Less than 30 minutes from Faro Airport, Royal Golf Course in Vale do Lobo ranks as one of Portugal’s most iconic golf courses.
As you play the course, the fairways wind their way through pine trees, lakes and Mediterranean vegetation, revealing scenery that makes this course a landmark in the European golfing land-scape. The course’s most iconic moment comes at the 16th hole, a par 3 situated atop Vale do Lobo’s iconic golden cliffs. Considered one of the most photographed holes in Europe, it chal-lenges players to hit the ball over a ravine onto the green, with the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop. The 9th hole, meanwhile, puts the precision of every shot to the test, with a vast lake protecting the green and further increasing the level of difficulty.
Designed by US architect Rocky Roquemore based on Sir Henry Cotton’s original plans, the Royal Golf Course officially opened in 1997 and quickly established itself as one of Portugal’s most prestigious courses. Since then it has welcomed amateur and professional players from all over the world, in addition to hosting the Portuguese Open in 2002 and 2003.
One of its greatest qualities lies precisely in the diversity of the landscape. From the tree-lined fairways to the panoramic views of the coastline that characterise holes 15, 16 and 17, every round offers fresh perspectives on the course and the Algarve coastline. The strategic positioning of the bunkers adds depth to the course, rewarding the accuracy, course-reading ability and tactical acumen of each player.

The experience continues beyond the 18 holes. The Royal Clubhouse is home to Spikes restau-rant, renowned for its contemporary Mediterranean and European cuisine, a modern fitness cen-tre and the Vale do Lobo golf shop. The facilities also include a putting green, areas for practic-ing your short game and spaces designed for improving your technique.
Golf lessons also play a prominent role in what the resort has to offer. Coaching programmes for adults and young people are held throughout the year, most notably the Vale do Lobo Junior Golf Academy, which combines technical instruction with practical on-course experience during the school holidays.
The sporting calendar also features two of the events most eagerly awaited by golfing enthusi-asts: Amateur Week, held in January, and Foursomes Week, in May. Both events bring together international players in an atmosphere where competition, camaraderie and a sense of commu-nity thrive naturally.
