Adega Vidago Villa - Onde o vinho nasce do silêncio das montanhas.

Adega Vidago Villa - Where wine bursts from the silence of the mountains.

In the small village of Ameal, in Loivos, on the mountain slopes of Vidago, there is a place where time seems to flow at a different pace. In amongst ancient mountains, woodlands and vineyards shaped by the patient hand of man, nature continues to set its own rhythm, indifferent to the rush of the world.
Only two inhabitants can be found there. Discreet guardians of this place, they work in the vineyard and relate to each vine as you might regard a member of your family, and understand each season as if they were reading an ancient calendar written by the land itself. They seek no recognition. They simply tend to the vineyard, day after day, much as the truly important things have always been looked after. This may well be why the authenticity of Vidago Villa begins long before the first bottle was ever made.
High up in the hills, at an altitude of around 550 metres, the estate unfolds against a backdrop where the landscape remains practically untouched. The vineyards share space with trees, granite outcrops and ancient woods, forming a setting where beauty has always existed.
This is precisely the beauty that architecture has chosen to respect. The Vidago Villa vineyard was planted around twenty-five years ago, but a new chapter in its history began in 2017. With the acquisition of the estate by its current owner, a thorough restoration of the vineyard was embarked upon, and the Vidago Villa Winery, designed by architect Paulo Carvalho, was also constructed. Rather than imposing a building on the landscape, the architect sought to do the opposite: to allow the landscape to penetrate the architecture. The centuries-old trees remained where they had always stood and were transformed into a natural extension of the winery itself, blurring the boundaries between the structure and nature.

High up in the hills, at an altitude of around 550 metres, the estate unfolds against a backdrop where the landscape remains practically untouched.

Built entirely from exposed concrete and arranged over three levels, the winery was designed in such a way that the wine follows its course as naturally as possible, taking advantage solely of the force of gravity. This technical approach reflects a simple philosophy: to intervene only when necessary and to ensure that the raw material reveals its full identity. Each space serves as a stage in this journey.
In the wine presses, some varieties are still trodden in the traditional manner. In the fermentation area, technology plays a discreet role in ensuring precision. Downstairs, in the barrel room, time becomes the head winemaker. Among carefully selected extra-fine French oak casks, the wines rest in silence, slowly acquiring depth, elegance and complexity.

Behind all this serenity stands a team that combines youth, know-how and an almost artisanal level of commitment. A young technician closely monitors the winery’s daily operations with meticulous attention and dedication, whilst winemaking is conducted with the thoroughness of a precision watchmaker: every detail is examined, every decision is weighed up, and every stage is overseen with absolute respect for time and the raw materials. This painstaking approach results in wines with a striking personality: exclusive reds and whites, unique in their expression, deeply connected to their origins and to the one-of-a-kind identity of Vidago Villa.
This floor is also home to one of the estate’s most exclusive experiences: a cosy wine cellar, designed for private tastings and gastronomic gatherings where wine is revealed with no need for hurry, just as with anything that deserves to be discovered slowly. This is a very special space.
From the top of the winery, the landscape once again takes centre stage. The rooftop overlooks the vineyard, the woods and the hills of Trás-os-Montes, offering a view that changes colour to the rhythm of the seasons. This is a space designed to host celebrations, events and moments of contemplation, where the horizon seems to prolong the very experience of wine.

But Vidago Villa was never intended to be just a winery. Right from the very beginning, the Vidago Villa Winery was conceived as a place where wine naturally crosses paths with other forms of creativity. Art, literature and culture can find a space for gathering and inspiration here, with exhibitions, book launches and other artistic expressions being held. This is a place where wine is tasted, but also where you can reflect, read, listen and simply live.
The estate develops over fourteen hectares, of which six and a half hectares are planted with vines. The granitic and schist soils, the altitude, the sun exposure and the protection afforded by the surrounding woodlands create a rare microclimate, responsible for a natural freshness and an elegance that have become the defining characteristics of the wines produced here.
Ever since the estate was restored, all practices have followed the principles of integrated production, giving priority to sustainable production methods and a deep respect for the ecosystem. The philosophy remains unchanged: to produce less, in order to produce better; to respect the estate’s origins in order to preserve its authenticity.
The first harvest was in 2018 and marked the arrival of the estate’s first Grande Reserva wines: a white made from Godelho grapes and a red in which Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca are blended in striking harmony. Since then, each new vintage has been subject to the same exacting standards, resulting in a collection of wines where the ‘Grande Reserva’ classification is no longer an exception and rather a natural consequence of the quality achieved.
Today, alongside Godelho, grape varieties such as Budelho(Samarrinho), Códega de Larinho and Arinto also grow here. Red grape varieties include Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and TintaRoriz. At this altitude, each variety finds a unique way to express the character of the Trás-os-Montes mountains, resulting in wines of great freshness, balance and personality.
Recognition came early, but this was never really a goal in itself. The medals won in Portugal and abroad, including top honours at leading international competitions, merely confirm what the vineyard had already been silently demonstrating: when the product’s origins are respected, excellence is bound to be recognised.
Perhaps these origins are Vidago Villa’s greatest blessing. Not just in the awards, nor in the architecture, nor even in the wines themselves. Rather in the light that streams through the winery as the day dawns. In the silence that accompanies the resting barrels. In the landscape that is endlessly varied. In the peacefulness of a place where everything happens modestly. And in the conviction that true luxury is still something that needs no fanfare.
This same conviction is what will give rise, in late 2026, to the first Vidago Villa Gourmet Olive Oil, taking the same deep connection with the land, with time and with authenticity beyond the realm of wine.
Because there are luxuries that you can buy. And there are others that can only be cultivated. Vidago Villa has always belonged to the latter category.
