Orlanda Amões, CEO of Tchissola Wines - «The Algarve is a sleeping giant in the Portuguese wine scene.»

CEO of Tchissola Wines, Orlanda Amões entered the world of wine as someone who brings soul back to the land. Combining her Angolan heritage, the precision she learned in Switzerland, and a contemporary vision of viticulture, Orlanda has built a brand that celebrates authenticity, sustainability, and emotion—always anchored in the meaning she has chosen to guide her: Tchissola, «happiness».

‘Tchissola’is an unusual name. How did the choice of this name inspire the concept of your wines and what does it actually mean?
The name ‘Tchissola’ has a powerful meaning and conjures up something that is intertwined with the philosophy and identity of Tchissola Wines. Of African linguistic and cultural origin, ‘Tchissola’ means ‘happiness’, a word that conveys much more than a simple feeling – it encapsulates a state of inner peace, contentment and connection to the natural rhythms of life. This meaning is the basis of the brand’s vision and purpose. At its core, ‘Tchissola’ symbolises joy, gratitude and spiritual harmony. It reflects that simple but profound happiness that comes from authenticity, balance and appreciation for nature’s gifts. The name embodies the emotional experience that the brand aspires to offer: the moment of contentment when tasting a pure, meaningful wine enlivened by the essence of the earth.

And how did this project come about?
The story of how this project came about is a deeply personal one, rooted in family heritage, passion, and a deep respect for tradition. My grandfather introduced me to the art of wine. Those moments brought us closer together and showed me that wine connects us to our loved ones and our roots. That was how I learned that wine is more than just something you serve - it is something you pass on. At the age of 21, something changed: my admiration turned into passion. That was the moment when what my grandfather had taught me went from being just fond memories to becoming a true calling. I see wine as a way to express creativity, emotion, and purpose. This awakening happened during a phase of self-discovery, when I first began to appreciate wine not just as a drink, but also as an art form. I realised that every decision in its production can be a personal expression.

Can you tell us about your background, prior to foundingTchissola Wines? What led you to the world of wine?
Before I set up Tchissola Wines, I studied in Switzerland, where I got a degree in International Business - a grounding that gave me the tools I needed to build and lead a global brand. But my real introduction to the world of wine started, as I mentioned, when my grandad taught me about this art. We would sit together while he shared stories. This showed me that wine is more than just a product - it is a way of preserving memories, honouring heritage and strengthening ties between generations. These experiences sparked a passion that ended up evolving into Tchissola Wines, a brand built on legacy, narrative and the belief that each and every bottle conveys a part of who we are.

Why did you choose the Algarve as the place to set upTchissola Wines?
Historically speaking, the Algarve has had a long, though often overlooked, tradition of wine production. Vineyards have thrived in the region for centuries, producing wines that were highly valued in both the local and shipping trade. However, with the passage of time, as tourism has become the dominant economic force, much of this agricultural heritage has been relegated to the sidelines. For me, this was not a liability but rather an opportunity: the opportunity to breathe new life, recognition and prestige into a region that has everything it needs to produce exceptional wines but has rarely received the attention it deserves. The Algarve is a sleeping giant in the Portuguese wine scene. Its varied microclimates and unique terroir create ideal conditions for producing characterful premium wines. My goal was not only to make a great wine, but also to make a statement – to prove that excellence can come from places that many people are more likely to overlook. By putting down roots in the Algarve, I positioned Tchissola Wines as a pioneer, leading a movement to revitalise its cultural heritage and inspire others to recognise its potential.

How would you describe the taste profile of Tchissola wines and what sets them apart?
Tchissola wines offer an expressive taste profile, grounded in the Portuguese terroir, in tradition, and in the art of winemaking. Each bottle is smooth, engaging, and suitable for any occasion. From full-bodied reds to aromatic whites and refreshing rosés, each wine bears a story to be enjoyed wherever life takes us. What sets them apart is the balance between expressive flavour, smooth texture and universal appeal. Each bottle is carefully curated, reflecting Portuguese heritage while providing an authentic, memorable and enjoyable experience in any situation.

What sustainable practices do you employ when producing your wines?
At the heart of Tchissola’s sustainability efforts lies a strong commitment to organic farming methods. By avoiding synthetic chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, we ensure that the land remains healthy and naturally productive. These organic practices help to preserve the structure of the soil, to support long-term fertility and to encourage the natural resilience of the vines. When it comes to winemaking at the winery, Tchissola focuses on technical expertise, precision, and modern, gentle methods, rather than additives, when transforming grapes into wine. By minimising intervention and avoiding unnecessary chemical additions, we allow each grape variety to be expressed naturally and transparently. This approach honours both sustainability and authenticity, ensuring that the wines remain true to their origins, while retaining their purity and quality.

What wine would you suggest as the one that truly represents the brand?
Our Red Reserva 2019 stands out as the most complete expression of the brand. It encapsulates the connection to Portuguese heritage: produced from Touriga Franca – an iconic Portuguese grape variety – balanced with Cabernet Sauvignon for depth and structure. The wine reflects Tchissola’s dedication to meticulous winemaking rooted in tradition. Its full-bodied, complex and smooth profile captures the essence of the landscapes that inspire the brand. The ageing, complexity and narrative behind this wine make it a centrepiece of what Tchissola represents. It is smooth, expressive and suitable for any occasion - qualities that reflect the philosophy of the brand to create versatile wines without compromising on exceptional character.

What is your favourite moment when opening a bottle of wine?
My favourite moment when opening a bottle of wine is a moment full of anticipation and appreciation. For me, it begins with the use of our own Tchissola corkscrew, which we are delighted to launch in 2026. There is something special about starting the experience with a tool created with the same care and philosophy that guide our wines. Once the cork is removed, the magical moment arrives: experiencing the first aroma, the layers of flavour, the fruit and the personality of the wine as it begins to open up. It is a small ritual of gratitude, a chance to pause and appreciate the stillness, the land and the history that each bottle carries.

The brand creates a chance to connect Portugal and Angola. Is there an ‘Angolan soul’ in this project for you?
For me, Tchissola Wines is more than a brand; it’s a bridge between the two worlds that shaped me. By creating experiences that bring together my Angolan heritage and the richness and tradition of Portuguese winemaking, I am able to honour both sides of my identity. The soul of Angola lives in the warmth, the storytelling, the sense of community and the deep respect for family and tradition that guides everything I do. At the same time, I celebrate and value the beauty of the Portuguese land where our wines are created.

What are the next moves for Tchissola Wines?
The next moves for Tchissola Wines are focused on growth, innovation, and deepening our connection with our community. We have embarked on an exciting phase, focused on expanding our portfolio, enriching the wine experience, and sharing our story with a broader audience. We are actively working to bring Tchissola Wines to more markets - in Portugal, Angola, and internationally. The next moves include launching new products and creating immersive experiences and events that showcase the fusion of Angolan heritage with Portuguese terroir that makes our brand unique.
