Ponte de Lima - A Elegância Atemporal da Vila Mais Antiga de Portugal

Ponte de Lima - The Timeless Elegance of Portugal’s Oldest Town

Nestled between the rolling green hills of the Alto Minho and the serene reflective waters of the River Lima lies Ponte de Lima, Portugal’s oldest town and one of the most charming gems of the country’s Norte region. Here, time does not stand still: it reinvents itself. To wander through its streets is to immerse yourself in an atmosphere where history, the art of living and authenticity come together in a rare balance between tradition and sophistication. Ponte de Lima is a destination to visit, to invest in and, for many, the place where people choose to live wholeheartedly and with gusto.

Manor houses and stately homes
Symbols of identity and hospitality, the manor houses, a legacy of long-established families, offer a unique experience of a past that is distant yet ever-present, in a welcome marked by great simplicity and tradition.
The landscape of Ponte de Lima is dotted with manor houses and stately homes that tell the story of lineages and rural nobility. Many have been exquisitely restored and transformed into charming guesthouses or exclusive residences, offering an experience of discreet and authentic luxury. Life in Ponte de Lima is marked by the tranquil rhythm of historic estates and the contemporary comfort of expertly restored properties.
Many of the manor houses have belonged to the same family since time immemorial, dating back to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, and are brimming with antiques sourced from all corners of the globe, representing years of Portuguese history and culture. Guests at the manor houses are invited by their hosts to participate in local activities, sample the region’s cuisine and wines, and explore the gardens, golf courses, water sports, nature trails, cycling routes and horse riding, in addition to a variety of cultural events.

Signature wine tourism
One of the great ambassadors of this region is born among ancient vineyards and bountiful terroirs: Vinho Verde. Ponte de Lima is now recognised as an outstanding wine tourism destination, where visitors can enjoy a range of experiences, including visits to the wine producers and bottlers in the municipality, where they can taste the wines produced here, each with their own unique characteristics, and even spend the night at some of the estates.
This experience is complemented by the wealth of local cuisine, the architectural and scenic heritage, the culture and customs of the region, as well as the numerous manor houses scattered alongside theRibeira Lima.
The Municipality of Ponte de Lima has been pouring its energies into numerous initiatives that combine food and wine with other tourist attractions (nature, culture, equestrian sports, etc.), with a focus on the local area and regional agri-food production, particularly Vinho Verde, produced mainly from the Loureiro grape variety, as a prime example of a local product of excellence.
Recognising the potential of this native grape variety for producing high-quality wines, in 2019, a partnership was established between the four municipalities of the Lima Valley to create a powerful brand that reflects the identity of the region, stretching from the mountains (Gerês National Park) to the sea, with the aim of fostering and promoting wine tourism and experience-based tourism.

A vibrant historic centre
The historic centre of Ponte de Lima begs you stop and take it all in. The medieval and Roman bridges, the flower-filled squares and the traditional-style houses all come together to create a scene of rare harmony. Charming terraces and cafés rub shoulders with the local market and a buzzing cultural calendar, where the present meets the past.

River tourism and nature
On the waters of the River Lima, water-based tourism finds an idyllic setting. Boat trips, kayaking or sightseeing tours on the Água-Arriba, the historic boat that once plied the banks of the Lima, and which has returned to the town and the river it once sailed up.
The Água-Arriba was introduced in 2019 as a nautical, tourist and educational project, aimed at actively preserving Ponte de Lima’s traditions, heritage and culture, as examples of this type are now rare. The origins of this vessel, which once sailed along the Ribeira Lima towards the Ponte de Lima market, have been lost in time.

A premier equestrian destination
Ponte de Lima is now an iconic name on the national and international equestrian scene. With a centuries-old connection to horses and equestrian traditions, Ponte de Lima has made its mark as a true International Equestrian Destination. Portugal’s oldest town stands as a living testament to a heritage in which the horse plays a central role – in the history, economy and cultural identity of the region.
Over the centuries, the horse – with particular emphasis on the Lusitano – has established itself as mankind’s companion in transport, farming, hunting and warfare, revealing a unique versatility that has made it one of the breeds most prized by amateurs and professionals alike all over the world. This close relationship between man, the region and tradition forms the basis of a visionary strategy launched by the Municipality in 2006, with the aim of preserving, promoting and showcasing this equestrian heritage internationally.

Ponte de Lima is now an iconic name on the national and international equestrian scene.

Out of this ambition came the project “Ponte de Lima, International Equestrian Destination”, which has resulted in the creation of world-class facilities and the establishment of a calendar of high-profile events. With its spacious grounds and modern facilities, Expolima hosts world-class competitions and events, bringing together athletes, breeders, owners and horse lovers from all corners of the globe.
The Ponte de Lima Horse Fair, launched in 2007, has become the signature event of this strategy, gaining national and international recognition, including awards from the Portuguese Tourist Board and the International Horseball Federation. These milestones have established Ponte de Lima as a preferred venue for high-level equestrian competition.
But Ponte de Lima is more than just a competitive sporting centre. It is natural landscape, it is historical heritage, it is sincere hospitality. Surrounded by the lush greenery of the Lima Valley and the cultural treasures of its historic centre, every event becomes a complete experience – where sport, tradition, fine food and warm hospitality go hand in hand.
Visiting Ponte de Lima as an ‘International Equestrian Destination’ is to embark on a unique experience, where nine centuries of history intertwine with a passion for horses and an equestrian calendar that showcases the region beyond its borders.

Ponte de Lima thus establishes itself as a luxury destination in the purest meaning of the word: where time is a privilege, authenticity a rare value and the good life a daily art.
