Maider Neto, Founder, CEO & Architect atMaider Neto - The ethos of luxury, from the Algarve to the world

True luxury in architecture often begins in a place that is less obvious: in honesty. In the Algarve, a region where light, landscape and Mediterranean culture shape the way we live, this idea becomes all the clearer. As an architect, designing in this part of the world means taking the time to listen to it first. Listening to the place, but above all listening to the people. Because I strongly believe that luxury does not come from simply replicating a certain aesthetic; rather it develops from a unique response to the people who will live in it.

Every home we design must be like no other. It has to reflect the identity, the pace and the way of life of the people who live in it. Which is why I believe that true luxury can only be found in architecture that is entirely bespoke. Luxury is not about extravagance; it is about authenticity. My own track record has shaped this way of thinking. I was born in Venezuela and chose the Algarve as my home and place of work. This has given me a naturally international perspective on architecture and the very concept of luxury. Over time, working with clients of different nationalities has made me realise that, regardless of culture, there is something universal in what people are looking for: authenticity, quality and timelessness.

This insight requires experience and expertise. In the luxury market, being a good designer is not enough. You need a deep understanding of the construction process. You need to be able to spot potential challenges and ensure that every decision – from the architecture down to the smallest detail – plays its part in creating a cohesive and enduring result. For me, one of the ways in which this luxury is most clearly expressed is through the use of materials. It can be found in the soundness of a well-thought-out structure, in the quality of the build and in the meticulous choice of materials. A luxury home needs to stand the test of time, grow in character over the years and retain its integrity long after the building work is complete. Perhaps that is why the word I would most associate with luxury is ethos – character. The character of the people who live in the house and the character of the location that it is situated in.

It was with this ethos that our studio first started in the Algarve, and it was also with this vision that we embarked on an increasingly international journey, working with clients from different parts of the world and broadening our reach into new markets, such as the United Kingdom, Mozambique and Dubai. This journey has been marked by international recognition, including the Luxury Lifestyle Awards 2026 and the European Property Awards 2025–2026, achievements that we see above all as a validation of our principles.

Ultimately, I believe that true luxury is something very simple: creating architecture that is tailored to the people who will live in it. Because, when architecture is honest, luxury is a natural consequence.
