Miguel Ángel Mendoza, Designer, CEO of Sua Santidade – Pure Design

I was born in Seville, but it was in the Algarve that I found the light that now guides my work. Throughout more than three decades dedicated to design, I have come to realise that creating a space goes way beyond aesthetics or form. It is about understanding the life that will unfold within it. My career began in industrial design, developing technical furniture and work environments. This experience taught me the importance of structure, functionality and detail. As time went by, this groundwork evolved naturally into interior design, conceptual architecture and creating objects. Today, I find that each project is like a composition where technique, emotion and intuition find their balance. When I start a new project, the first thing I do is observe. I observe who will inhabit the space, how they live, the energy of the place and the existing architecture. Only then does the designing truly begin. For me, design should not impose itself: it should reveal what already exists in terms of potential. My language strives for simplicity. Clean lines, balanced proportions and carefully chosen materials. I believe that true sophistication comes from restraint and consistency. This vision gives rise to what I call pure design: a way of working where light, matter and space play the leading roles. Living and working in the Algarve has strengthened this conviction. Here, luxury takes on a different meaning. It is not measured by excess, but by the quality of the experience that a space provides. The Atlantic light, the proximity of the sea and the more contemplative pace of life are conducive to an architecture that breathes with the landscape. In this context, luxury becomes silent. You can see it in the way a space frames the horizon, in the texture of a material that ages with dignity, or in the sense of calm that an interior can give you. Basically, I think the real purpose of design is simple: to create places where people can feel inspired, at peace, and deeply connected to the place where they are.
