Ricardo Azevedo, Architect and CEO Ricardo Azevedo Arquiteto - The essence of luxury in architecture

Luxury comes from desire – and the ability to recognise it.
First and foremost, it is a matter of desire. Not an immediate desire, but one that develops somewhere in the space between culture and time, through the ability to recognise what is truly authentic and rare. Luxury is not a response to a need: it creates distance, gives meaning and defines what ought to be desired. In architecture, it is manifested through emotion, in the way a space is felt, experienced and recognised by the people who inhabit it, almost as a natural extension of their identity and the way they choose to live.
Every project begins in this invisible space, in a deep understanding of the people who will live there – of their being, their gestures, their rhythms. This is the relationship in which architecture finds its meaning and where its true exclusivity originates. Because authenticity cannot be replicated: it doesn’t come from formulae or languages applied indiscriminately, rather it comes from kinship, listening and interpretation. Every place, every person and every story introduces a difference unlike any other. And it is from this difference that value and rarity are forged.
Luxury in architecture is thus achieved with discretion. It does not impose itself, nor is it immediately self-explanatory.It reveals itself gradually, like all things that are rare and enduring. It manifests itself in the way the space accompanies the people who live in it, in the way certain moments find a silent echo in the experience of each day. It goes beyond the design of forms: what matters is creating relationships – between light and matter, between indoors and out, between the space and the memory of the people who inhabit it.
Architecture is experienced in a state of flux. In this intimate relationship between body and space, everything gains meaning and permanence. This is precisely where luxury can be found. Not in what is shown, but in what is felt. When a space ceases to be nothing more than a backdrop and silently and continuously becomes part of life; when it becomes impossible to disassociate the place from what is experienced within it.
It is at this rare, intimate and deeply personal juncture that architecture finds its most enduring meaning, establishing itself as experience, memory and legacy.
It is architecture that feels!
