LARA by Vítor Matos - O regresso ao essencial

LARA - by Vítor Matos Back to basics

Following a remarkable career that has established him as one of the leading figures in Portuguese gastronomy, earning him Michelin stars and the title of Boa Cama Boa Mesa Chef of the Year 2026, Vítor Matos has chosen Vila Real as the backdrop for launching his most personal project. LARA is a place where excellence remains non-negotiable, but where the true hallmark is a sense of familiarity.
More than just a new haute cuisine destination, LARA represents a return to the true meaning of the word ‘home’. This is the first project devised and run as a family affair, bringing together Vítor Matos, his wife and daughter in a shared vision of hospitality. A restaurant where technical precision goes hand in hand with emotion, and where every detail has been carefully considered to ensure diners are always welcomed as a special guest.

Located in the heart of Vila Real, LARA proudly celebrates the Trás-os-Montes region[…].

Located in the heart of Vila Real, LARA proudly celebrates the Trás-os-Montes region, whilst never losing touch with the contemporary flair that characterises the chef’s work. Nature sets the pace in the kitchen, and seasonality provides the starting point for constantly evolving menus, created using the finest produce of each season. Local and regional ingredients are reinterpreted through a streamlined approach, where technique never detracts from the authenticity of the produce.

It is precisely in this sophisticated simplicity that LARA’s identity lies. The flavours acknowledge their Portuguese roots, yet are presented in a modern, elegant and subtle fashion. Each dish aims to tell a story about the region, the people who cultivate it and the memories that give it its identity. There is no room for excess or artifice; what you find is precision, sensitivity and respect for the ingredients.
The experience extends beyond the cuisine. The wine list has been carefully curated to work with each menu, whilst the selection of olive oils and teas enhances the attention to detail that underpins the entire meal. These are small gestures that transform a dinner into a packed experience for the senses, designed to be savoured at a leisurely pace.

At a particularly significant moment in Vítor Matos’s career, LARA also represents an affirmation of identity. After decades at the helm of some of the country’s most prestigious kitchens, the chef has now chosen a more intimate approach, where the human touch is at the heart of the experience. Sophistication still features, but is expressed through the peaceful atmosphere of the space, the warmth of the team and the authenticity of the culinary delights on offer.
The name itself encapsulates the restaurant’s philosophy. LARA represents the “Lar” (Home) that welcomes guests, the “Amor” (Love) that cooks, the “Raízes” (Roots) that inspire and the “Arte” (Art) that enhances each creation. Four letters that sum up a way of experiencing hospitality, where cooking is also a gesture of generosity and sharing.
More than just a gastronomic destination, LARA encourages you to discover a more intimate side of Vítor Matos. A chef who never stops striving for excellence, but who now finds it in a setting where luxury is measured in terms of authenticity, attention to detail and the ability to make every guest feel truly at home.
