Palatial - Um palácio dos sentidos

Palatial - A Palace of the Senses

Those who enter Palatial may not imagine that they are about to experience a truly unique moment of discovery. This is how we would describe Braga’s first Michelin-starred restaurant, with Chef Rui Filipe at the helm of the kitchen and a team whose movements seem almost regal.
Here, fine dining, hospitality, art and wine come together to create a concept meticulously conceived down to the finest detail — a destination that invites guests to savour time, linger and return. The name itself embodies this philosophy. Palatial derives from its proximity to the Portuguese word “palato” (palate), while also evoking the world of palaces, associated with grandeur, elegance and exclusivity. “We could define Palatial as a palace of the palate,” explains Tomás Lima, who oversees the space, with pride. More than a restaurant, the ambition of Tomás and his father, António Lima, has always been to create a comprehensive experience in which every element contributes to a memorable stay. We can gladly confirm that this goal has been achieved.
This vision extends to the suites, transforming Palatial into a true gastronomic destination. The possibility of extending the experience beyond the dining table allows a visit to the restaurant to become a getaway defined by comfort, privacy and the time needed to savour every moment. “We often say that we are not a hotel with a restaurant, but rather a restaurant with a hotel,” says Tomás. It is an idea that reflects the desire to offer something that goes beyond the meal itself, attracting both national and international guests, many of whom travel here specifically to discover the space.
Art also plays a central role in this narrative. Outside, an imposing mural by Joana Vasconcelos has become one of Palatial’s most emblematic images. Inspired by the movement of waves, the work was initially created to provide greater privacy to the space, but ultimately acquired a distinctive artistic and identity-driven dimension of its own, serving as an invitation to discover what lies beyond.

Inside, the artistic presence continues through works by different artists, notably Paulo Neves’ marble sculptures, alongside other carefully integrated pieces of photography, sculpture and design. Art is not presented as an isolated decorative element; it is an integral part of the experience, helping to create an atmosphere in which contemporary design, sophistication and comfort coexist in perfect harmony.
And if you are waiting for the gastronomic experience itself, well… every word that follows will seem inadequate when compared with the flavours we experienced. The idea is precisely the one shared by Tomás: prepare to enter a palace of flavours and feel like royalty. If you would prefer to begin on a less daring note, you can opt for the Tradição menu, which brings together a selection of reinvented traditional dishes, presented in a way that you will taste, feel and understand in a truly unique manner. If you impose no limits on yourself, we recommend choosing the Inovação menu, which brings together flavours and techniques from around the world. There are also à la carte options.
As for us… we lost ourselves in the seaweed and mussel croissant, the smoked eel soufflé with kimchi and caviar, and the lily meringue — from these opening flavours alone, we knew this was an experience we would not forget. The mature octopus, cooked for four hours at 85°C and accompanied by a sweet potato preparation and barnacles cooked in a seaweed reduction, with jalapeño sauce and sun-dried octopus roe, remains vividly in our memory, as does the turbot, grilled over charcoal and served with grilled chard marinated in raspberry vinaigrette on top and cockles, taking us on a journey to Puglia. We then tasted the delicious lamb, marinated in Portuguese flavours ranging from Port wine to Madeira wine, juniper and pink pepper, accompanied by flavours of the land and a cocoa brioche (the latter to be dipped into the sauce at the end!). We finished with 72% cocoa chocolate combined with different cherry blossom preparations, blackberry compote and goat’s cheese foam… unforgettable.

The wine list also reflects this constant pursuit of excellence. Featuring both Portuguese and international references, it is the result of a meticulous process of selection and tasting, designed to offer diversity, quality and discovery. “After a long process of research and tasting, we have managed to ensure that we have some of the finest and most diverse wines at Palatial, with the aim of providing guests with different experiences,” Tomás summarises. The flexibility of the wine pairings also allows personalised journeys to be created, from explorations of the wines of the Minho region to discoveries of the world’s great wine-producing regions.
Yet perhaps what most distinguishes Palatial is the attention devoted to detail. Part of the inspiration came from Tomás’ experiences in countries such as Japan, where hospitality is expressed through the ability to anticipate needs and surprise guests through small gestures. “I would like people to feel that we think about them even before they need anything,” he says.
This philosophy is present in the service, the atmosphere and the constant search for new experiences. Palatial regularly hosts wine dinners, themed events and private celebrations, and also has a private room for exclusive gatherings. Intimate weddings, birthdays and corporate events all find here a setting in which personalisation and discretion are of particular importance. We can even say that a famous American rapper has already “thrown a party” in this palace.
The ability to innovate is equally part of the venue’s identity. Over time, the restaurant has promoted distinctive experiences that bring together gastronomy, music, wine and culture, reinforcing the idea that every visit can be different from the last. The future follows the same direction. New events, projects related to wine education and exclusive experiences are part of Palatial’s growth plans, always with the aim of surprising guests and elevating their experience.
At a time when luxury is increasingly defined by authenticity and quality time, Palatial establishes itself as a place where every detail has been conceived to offer something rare: the feeling that a meal can become a complete experience. For us, a truly genuine experience.
