Anyone arriving at Quinta da Terrincha, in Torre de Moncorvo, soon feels at home. The art of hospitality that the people of the Douro region are known for is reflected in every detail of this 380-hectare estate, which is steeped in history and tradition. The property’s origins date back to before the formation of Portugal, and include several remains of Roman civilisation. Back in the times of the Portuguese monarchy, it was King Afonso V who gifted it to the nobility, and more specifically to Dom Álvaro, as a thank you for his services in the Battle of AlcácerQuibir. Over the course of time, Quinta da Terrincha passed through the hands of various blue-blooded families, and in 1994 it was bought by the Seixas Pinto family, who are its present owners.
It is not difficult to feel embraced by the presence of history here – that of Portugal and that of the family – as every nook and cranny seems to be an invitation to imagination. With 15 one- to three-bedroom villas and a main house consisting of six unique suites, the manor house styling is a real eye catcher, maintained over time to preserve its origins. All the villas, which are fully equipped and have their own kitchens, have been restored and rebuilt, such as Casa da Eira or Casa dos Bois, and retain their unrivalled rustic beauty. The main house, on the other hand, was once inhabited by the Countess of Pinhel and is considered to be a 19th-century manor house. With its distinctive design, this is a space that contains unique rustic details, such as a stone fireplace in the bedroom or the old workers’attendance punching machine in the communal area.
Perfect for welcoming families with children, Quinta da Terrincha never ceases to invite you to explore. Walking around, you’ll see the Chapel of St Anthony - where the staff maintain the tradition of ringing the bell to warn of thunderstorms - a swimming pool and various quiet spaces to switch off, surrounded by a unique natural landscape. But there’s more: the Quinta offers guests a range of experiences, such as trekking, jeep rides, massages and picnics with regional products.

And for those who would like to see a bit more of the region, we haven’t forgotten the nearby FozCôa, where you can see some of the valley’s Palaeolithic cave engravings. In Moncorvo, the only question is where to start, as the municipality has a vast heritage of museums, such as the Castle Museum, located within the city walls, or the imposing Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption (with frescoes of the Last Supper) and various places of interest with evidence of the Jewish heritage. Another irresistible experience is learning about the process of preparing coated almonds, recognised as one of the 7 Gastronomic Wonders of Portugal. And, of course, to taste them, since the local council offers free almond tastings. Along the way, don’t forget to stop and enjoy some of the viewpoints with breath-taking views over the Douro with its greenery, the colour of the soil and the river intertwining.
Having enjoyed the coated almonds, let’s talk some more about flavours. There is plenty to try for those staying at Terrincha, and what they serve is special because it comes from the surroundings. The orange juice at breakfast is made with oranges from the estate and there are various homemade jams. In the snack bar, there’s a combination of products, such as regional cured ham and cheese, which can also be served on a board, in a tasting that you will want to do again. A wine tasting is another unmissable experience for visitors, but we’ll talk about that later.
Terrincha also has a cheese production facility operated by a third party and its own olive oil production, with around 100 hectares of groves. For those who want to indulge in the region’s signature steak, cod or octopus, there is also the Cantinho da Terrincharestaurant, located around 100 metres from the property. The Quinta further boasts an events space and restaurant, well known in the region for organising weddings.Located within a World Heritage Site, Quinta da Terrincha is a family project with a lot of love for this region. And there are many reasons for this. The property is located in the Vilariça Valley, the most fertile valley on the Iberian Peninsula, whose rich soil results in a very high potential for fruit, vegetables, citrus fruits and vines.
And if we thought there was nothing more to discover about this boutique hotel, here’s an important part of its essence: a vineyard with a history. With more than 1,500 hectares of vines, Quinta da Terrincha produces several varieties of wine in a controlled inhouse process, from bottling to labelling. The harvest begins in August and guests are invited to experience all of it – and, if they wish, to help with the harvest –, in an experience that portrays the Douro and the wealth of the estate. As a result of planting vines at different altitudes, Terrincha’s wine has different characteristics and its production respects the cyclical moments of the grape varieties, a unique feature in a choice of wines that ranges from white to red, and includes rosé. These wines offer a portrait of the Douro, as do most of the hands that do the harvesting, of local pickers. If Quinta da Terrincha were a book, we would say that it has all the chapters its needs to make a perfect story, with pages steeped in memories, essence and tradition.
