Between resting our eyes or gazing at the starlit sky, we chose the latter. The low level of pollution means that the stars can twinkle unfiltered, and our plan is to sleep under a blanket of light which, if we’re lucky, will unleash a shooting star that has been held captive for millennia. We make a wish and eternalise it with a glass of champagne, courtesy of the Onduli Ridge hotel. If all this stargazinggets the better of us, we fall asleep peacefully and comfortably in the luxury suites moulded by nature.
We’re in Namibia, the country of lunar landscapes of red rocks, teeming wildlife and deserts that stretch all the way to the sea. We find ourselves in the middle of nature, at the Onduli Ridge safari lodge in the Damaraland region, in a tourist spot that should be experienced at least once in a lifetime. Hidden amongst the granite boulders, and surrounded by arid desert, the lodge bears homage to the region’s giraffe, and offers all kinds of accommodation and numerous activities that will occupy a large part of your days. There are a total of six suites with king size beds, air conditioning, work areas and partially open-air bathrooms. In all of them Wi-Fi and sustainability are a decisive factor in how each one works. All the energy is sourced from the sun and fossil fuels don’t come into the equation.

Rooms that are more like lookout points

Here, the difficulty lies in recognising the separation between indoors and outdoors. Not that it’s a problem, but more of a stroke of genius on the part of those who thought it up and created it. The rooms are veritable lookout points and the communal areas are spaces for similar contemplation, with a library, dining rooms, bar, deck, swimming pool and an outdoor fire pit. Patterns related to animal life can be found in the décor of the rooms and on the walls there are artefacts recalling the mystery of Namibia. When it comes to whetting the palate, themed evenings are organised, where Italy comes to the African table in the form of spaghetti. The country’s traditional dishes are also on the menu, made from fruit and vegetables. But the magic of Onduli lies in the experiences it offers. These include desert hikes, watching the sand dunes meet the open plains, rock paintings and natural parks teeming with wildlife, home to majestic herds of elephants, giraffes and, who knows, black rhinos. New beginnings and new adventures start here, at Onduli Ridge.
