Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has announced that Eça de Queiroz’s mortal remains will be transferred to the National Pantheon, as a way of honouring the intellectual group of "Life’s Vanquished”. The declaration was made at the Lisbon Congress Centre, and the head of state guarantees that the move will take place soon. It should be noted that, in 2021, the Portuguese Parliament approved a project to grant National Pantheon honours to the writer’s remains, in recognition of his literary works, decisive in the history of Portuguese Literature. Eça de Queiroz died on 16 August 1900 and his body lies in the cemetery of Santa Cruz do Douro, in Baião.
