According to data released by the Directorate-General
for Education and Science Statistics (DGEEC) for the 2018-2022 period, 53% of lead
authors of scientific articles are women, leaving the other gender in the
minority. By contrast, a large proportion of publications as the final author are
by men, which is usually associated with the position of research leader. In
addition to this male majority, there is a higher frequency of correspondence
authors and sole authors of scientific publications. In the areas of medical
and health sciences, women lead as authors of publications, while men are
mainly involved in engineering and technology sciences.
