Reflecting the location
on which it stands and the wishes of its owners, the La Lucia villa, found on
the north coast of Kwazulu Natal, south of Umhlanga, in South Africa, combines
elegance and comfort with simple spaces. Nestled in a forest, the property
enjoys breathtaking sea views, two characteristics that have inspired the
architecture, developed by the SAOTA studio, and the interior design, created
by the practice ARRCC.
Two huge trees greet you when you arrive and, then, a platform of floating steps, shaded by a pergola lead to the entrance of the villa. The wood-lined ceilings and the gigantic windows, perfectly framed by the seascapes, immediately jump out at you. The lower floor has been designed to ‘merge’ with the outdoor terraces, the pool deck and the gardens. Sliding doors ensure flexibility, as they allow this floor to be a continuous space, or more private. The four bedrooms with sea views are found on the upper level and open out onto individual terraces. When closed, the bronze-coloured aluminium sliding screens that line the exterior of the house provide protection, while bringing a unique design to the building.
