In time for spring, and about one year after the coupé, the new
Bentley Continental GT Convertible, the convertible version of the third
generation Continental GT has arrived. The new luxury car of the British brand
was unveiled at the end of 2018, at the Los Angeles Auto Show, in the USA.
Worthy of a James Bond film, the Bentley Continental GT Convertible is based on the same technology platform as the coupé version. Both have a W12 twin-turbo 6.0-litre engine that translates into an impressive 635 horsepower. Apart from the possibility to choose from four more or less ‘aggressive’ driving types – Comfort, Bentley, Custom and Sport – and among many other aspects, this cabriolet stands out for its impressive figures, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds, and reaching a top speed of 333 km/h. It boasts an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
There are no major changes to the bodywork compared with the coupé. In fact, its weight has been increased by 160 kg, but, according to Bentley, the bodywork is about 5% more rigid than that of the previous Continental Convertible GT. Thanks to its powerful engine however, the performance has not been affected. The suspension now features high capacity triple chamber shock absorbers, with active stabiliser bars. Of course, the obvious differences can be found in the roof. For the first time available in fabric, in seven different colours, the new GT Convertible can be opened or shut in just 19 seconds, at speeds up to 50 km/h.
Like all cars built by Bentley, the new Continental GT Convertible is handcrafted, giving the customer the freedom to customise it.
