Lightyear, a company based in the Netherlands, has got a project on its hands that received a funding from the European Union’s research and innovation programme Horizon 2020. Having raised 15 million euros for the project in less than two years while opening its own production unit in Helmond, Lightyear wanted to go further and created its all electric extended range five seat solar car: the Lightyear One. Thanks to the lightweight construction and streamlined format, the car has a range of 400 to 800 km (250-500 miles) and photovoltaic cells that will be able to, in theory, provide electricity to 20,000 km annually. In terms of engine, it will not have one, but four, one for each wheel, thus reaching a possible improvement in efficiency, gaining traction at all its four wheels. The world has its eyes focused on Katwijk, in the Netherlands, as the Lightyear One prototype will be released on the next 25th of June. It is expected the production of Lightyear One to start in 2020.
