Lurdes Campos
Managing director of Hospital de Santa Maria - Porto
She was born in Mozambique and holds a degree in Business Management with complementary training in Senior Management of Health Institutions. Lurdes Campos began her career as an auditor in a multinational company and for 12 years, in addition to being responsible for supervising teams, she was involved in work for the World Bank, in Angola, and also in Mozambique. After a three-year stint at the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Oporto, she joined the team at Hospital de Santa Maria - Porto, where she has been managing director since 2008.
Hospital Santa Maria – Porto’s activity has greatly increased in recent years. What factors have triggered this increase?
Yes, the activity of our hospital is growing steadily – more than 2000 people come here every day for consultations in more than 30 medical specialities, surgery, treatments or clinical examinations. As a hospital heavily specialising in Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Sports Medicine, our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation service is a leading facility in the north of the country, and we have a new Intermediate Care and Critical Patient unit that allows us to take in, in all safety, patients with serious diseases. We are also a hospital specialised in insurance claims care, working with most insurers. All this gives a good insight into the dynamics of this hospital, as a result of the strong investment in the modernisation of facilities and in new technologies. The new Clinical Management team, led by Dr Rui Pinto, Orthopaedist, has also introduced new assets, such as new medical specialities and further support for Permanent Medical Care.
As the managing director of a private healthcare facility, what other challenges do you face?
Being a medium-sized hospital, this healthcare facility has very specific characteristics. It was founded by the ‘Missionary Franciscans of Our Lady’. Although it is now under the management of experienced and qualified lay professionals with proper training, one of the challenges is to continue to uphold the principles and values of its founders. We also have to deal with the strong competition that exists in private medical care, while respecting the philosophy of humanisation of care, which has always characterised this hospital. Being versatile and being able to make quick decisions provide daily challenges.
«We will continue our mission to deliver excellence in healthcare, with the most innovative clinical practices and the most advanced treatments»
Hospital de Santa Maria - Porto is one of the oldest hospitals in the country. Will future strategies involve growth or consolidation?
This hospital turns 130 in September. It is currently renowned for its specialisation in Orthopaedics and Traumatology and Sports Medicine. The coming years will involve consolidation and seeing a return on the major investments that have been made in human resources, in new spaces and in innovative technology, but it will continue to grow in a sustained manner. We will continue our mission to deliver excellence in healthcare, with the most innovative clinical practices and the most advanced treatments, while continuing to advocate and promote preventive medicine as a way to maintaining a healthy life.
