Tourism in the last 20 years and a look into the future
Manuel Violas
Chairman of the Solverde Board of Directors
Tourism has grown considerably in the 21st century mainly due to the effects of globalisation. This growth intensified in the 2000s, only being interrupted by the 2009 economic crisis and now, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Portugal, the tourism sector is fundamental for the generation of wealth and employment. According to data from the Portugal Tourist Board, in the last nine years the country has recorded an average annual growth rate of 7.2% in overnight stays. In the same period of time, an average annual variation rate of more than 10% was also observed in tourism revenue, which, from 7.6 billion in 2010, increased to more than 18 billion in 2019.
Although our country takes first place in Europe with regard to the vaccination process and, little by little, we are, even if slowly, beginning to return ‘to normality’, it will still take a few years to recover levels close to those of 2019 and, above all, to overcome the global effects caused by this year and a half of almost total paralysis.
At the same time, because of the COVID pandemic and the acceleration of trends that were already underway, we are seeing changes in the way we travel and the destinations we choose. Travellers are looking for destinations that guarantee outdoor activities and plenty of contact with nature.
In the coming months, domestic travel will be the top choice. This trend will continue its strong presence in the sector, with travellers wanting to know more about their country and its places, seeking more authentic experiences and favouring travel in small groups of friends or family.
The economic impact of COVID-19 will inevitably mean that, in the future, travellers will be more attentive to promotions and brands that provide them with the best service at the best price and that have clear conditions concerning cancellations, refund processes, etc.
At Solverde we have always been committed to, on the one hand, providing a premium quality service to our clients and, on the other, with keeping up with the trends in the sector and the needs of those who visit us. These have been complicated times over the last 18 months, but we quickly managed to prepare our casinos and hotels to welcome our clients and guests with total safety and maximum comfort.
With casinos and hotels all over the country, we want our clients and friends to once again enjoy our spaces and our unique offers and experiences in each one of them.
That is why we always work hard for excellence in the art of hospitality!
