The world came to a standstill last Thursday with unexpected news: Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom died at Balmoral Castle, in Scotland at the age of 96. Hours earlier, the media had reported that doctors were concerned about the Queen's poor state of health and that she was under medical supervision. No one could have imagined she would depart shortly afterwards.
"The Queen died peacefully,” Buckingham Palace announced. Surrounded by her family, Elizabeth II left this world with the certainty that she had left a deep impression on it.  She sat on the throne for 70 years, leaving her mark on English history with the longest reign ever of the country and the second longest reign in the world, after France's King Louis XIV. It is now Charles' turn to take the crown, so we will have to get used to the title King Charles III.
Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born on April 21, 1926, in London. Her teenage years were spent during the Second World War. Following the death of her father, King George VI, Elizabeth II acceded to the throne in 1952. The great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, she was married to Prince Philip and went on to have four children: Charles, the eldest son; Anne Elizabeth, aged 72; Andrew Albert, Duke of York and, the youngest, Edward Antony, Earl of Wessex.
The Queen was served by 15 Prime Ministers, including Winston Churchill and Tony Blair. She witnessed many important moments in history, notably the wave of decolonisation in the 1970s, the end of the Cold War and the tragic death of Princess Diana, in addition to scandals, which she navigated with class. It was indeed a seven-decade reign in which the Queen saw the world twist and turn. To be exact, she saw ten heads of state pass through the Soviet Union and Russia, 16 US presidents and seven popes. It is safe to say that there are many Britons today who have never known another monarch, so these are difficult days for the nation. A period of mourning will now follow, a funeral and then the coronation of the successor, with a possible bank holiday planned.
Mourning for the UK’s matriarch can be felt in all four corners of the world. As much in the many messages of condolences, as in the countless number of floral tributes currently colouring the grey earth of Great Britain. In memory of Queen Elizabeth II, Villas&Golfe leaves its condolences, not in the format of roses, but in the format of an image, since this is what will remain of an illustrious 96-year history. Let's look, therefore, together at the life of the most enduring monarch in British History.
