For a long time he has been evolving into one of the best conductors and orchestra directors. But today, Rui Massena is more. Much more. In every way. And one of them is also being a composer and pianist. The Portuguese musician, whose international popularity has grown solidly and exponentially, is already heard by half a million people in around 90 countries. An achievement and a source of pride. For him and for the country. But it is Rui Massena who admits it: there is still much to be written. And history will play the songs of his conquests. And what about us? And the world? We will give them a standing ovation.
If you could choose, what would be the two moments that have most marked the country and the world in these last few years?
In Portugal and in the world, the COVID-19 pandemic is certainly the most relevant moment in our life in society because of the number of lives that have been lost and the way it has changed the social language. In second place is the September 11 and terrorism, as well as the opening of social networks, for all the disruption they have brought, both in the understanding of the world and in changing our behaviour.
Professionally, what was the most decisive moment for you in these two decades?
The most important of all was June 06, 2014. The day I publicly released my first composition that gave rise to a new stage in my life, when I added my own voice to the classics I was getting to know. I am now a performer, who loves the history of music, and a composer with a voice heard in more than 90 countries. I feel more complete. But this isn’t over yet. The best is yet to come.
What do you think is the most urgent change that the country and the world need to make in the coming years?
It is difficult to answer fully when we are in a time with so many challenges. But I’ll put them together under the umbrella of sustainability of life on Earth with the goal of total decarbonisation, for a sustainable life with nature, in which the ethical regulation of Artificial Intelligence, regulated digital transition and common sense take place to improve life in society, based on good values.
