A sea of turquoise waters on one side, the dense green of tropical forests on the other. This 18-hole Championship Course sits between the best of both worlds on a 14,000-hectare island, where architecture bows down to Mother Nature. Developing within COMO Laucala Island, a resort made up of 25 independent residences, the golf course is embellished by the surrounding floraand fauna. Coconut palms grow alongside exotic orchids and the jungle stretches right down to the edge of the beach, a spectacle that golfers can appreciate along the course designed by Scotsman David McLay Kidd. This is a challenging par 72 awaiting those with ambitious and discerning spirits.
COMO Laucala Island
Teeing off on an island paradise
The true essence of golf
Let’s leave the course’s level
of difficulty aside for a moment and concentrate on the volcanic mountains that
surround Laucala Island. The setting is dreamlike, with undulating, tree-lined
holes that wind through the coconut grovesproliferating there. Small streams
cross the fairways and wetland areas border many of the holes. On the sandy
shorelinewe discover the course’s signature hole, the 12th,with its
green stretching right down to the beach that abuts the Pacific. There are some
people that have even compared the looks of the course to the setting of the
Jurassic Park films, which is a thought that is not entirely unfounded, given
the contrast between the humid jungle and the picturesque coastline. Rumour has
it that this is the toughest golf challenge in the South Pacific, and for anyone
who still sees themself as an amateur, we would recommend you come armed with a
huge box of balls and an extra helping of resourcefulness– although lessons
with golfing professionals can easily be arranged. What is certain is that this
course is for everyone and anyone, and while you play you can enjoy access to
the driving range and putting green, as well as use the golf clubs and buggies.
COMO Laucala course is an
exclusive experience that will surely remain engraved in your memory, not least
because this is where the true essence of golf lies.
