This is a special destination. Not only for the Mediterranean Sea, the warm climate, the gothic churches, quality bars and restaurants, mansions and many beautiful people, but also for the very high standard of its golf courses, many of them just a few minutes from Palma. This time we’ve stopped off at the stunning Son Gual golf course, located in Manacor, on the seductive island of Mallorca. Designed by Thomas Himmel and opened in 2007, this is, thanks to its natural surroundings, one of the most beautiful courses of the island.
Magnificent views of the Tramuntana Mountains, over a thousand olive trees, countless wildflowers and water obstacles are undoubtedly pleasing to the eye, but many of them add extra difficulty to the game. These natural obstacles are joined by 66 bunkers scattered throughout this 18-hole par 72.
Attacking the flag from the outset is not the best of plans. Patience, persistence, concentration and skill in your short game will be rewarded. The round starts with a Par 4, 420 metres long and featuring bunkers on the left, usually played into the wind, followed by a shorter Par 4, with a deep bunker along the way. At the end of the first half, the 9th comes into view, the longest Par 3 on the course, at 200 metres. The water obstacle to the left and the gazing eye of the public, sitting comfortably on the Club House terrace, can play havoc with your nerves. The same audience will watch on as you tee off from the 10th, a Par 4 of 367 metres. At 532 metres, the 18th hole is not only the longest, but also provides a worthy full stop to the course.
Son Gual is a private golf club. Players are warmly welcomed but are asked to respect the club’s etiquette rules, thus ensuring the excellent quality of the course is safeguarded.
